CODE OF ETHICS1

Members of the Association of Municipal Administrators of New Brunswick (AAMNB) must observe the Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct below. Anyone applying for membership must agree to observe the following:

  1. Be dedicated to the concepts of effective and democratic local government, constituted by responsible elected representatives and be convinced that professional general management is essential to the achievement of this objective.

  2. Affirm the dignity and value of the services rendered by local government and maintain a constructive, creative and practical attitude towards local governance and a deep sense of social responsibilities as a trusted public servant.

  3. Dedicate oneself to the highest ideals of honor and integrity in all dealings in order to earn the respect and trust of elected officials, other officials and employees, as well as the public.

  4. Recognize that the primary function of local government is always to serve the interests of the community at large.

  5. Submit policy proposals to elected representatives, present them with the facts and advise them on policy issues that will serve as a basis for decision-making and the establishment of community objectives, and support and implement adopted municipal policies by elected representatives.

  6. Recognize that the elected representatives of the population have the right to take credit for establishing municipal policies; and that the implementation of policies falls to municipal administrators.

  7. Make it a point to continually improve your professional skills and develop the competence of your colleagues in the application of management techniques.

  8. Keep the community informed of local governance, encourage communication between citizens and all municipal officials; emphasize friendly and courteous service to the public; and seek to enhance the quality and image of the public service.

  9. Resist any encroachment on his professional responsibilities, believing that he should be free to implement official policies without interference, and resolve every problem without discrimination according to principles and justice.

  10. Handle all personnel matters on the basis of merit to make decisions guided by fairness and impartiality regarding appointments, salary adjustments, promotions and discipline.

  11. Do not seek any favor; and consider that using confidential information or abusing public office for personal gain constitutes a dishonest practice.

Adoption by AAMNB-AMANB members at the 2013 Annual General Meeting as of June 13, 2013.
